Range Hoods

How to use your Argosta range hood

Pyramid chimney or slim under-cabinet, BLDC inverter motors and three-layer filters. Here is how to install it right, use it so it actually clears the air, and keep the filters working.

How-To Guide7 min readUpdated November 2026

A range hood only works if it is installed at the right height, switched on before the cooking starts, and kept clean. Argosta's pyramid and slim hoods share the same essentials — a BLDC inverter motor, a three-layer aluminium grease filter with a carbon layer, LED lighting and a 120 mm outlet — so this one guide covers them all.

Models this guide covers

1. Ducted or recirculating?

Ducted (extraction)Recirculating
How it worksAir is pushed outside through a 120 mm ductAir passes the grease and carbon filters and returns to the kitchen
RemovesSteam, grease, heat and smellsGrease and most smells; not steam or heat
NeedsA wall or ceiling route to the outside, a back-draught flapThe carbon filter, replaced every 3–6 months
Choose it whenYou can route a duct — always the better optionNo outside wall or the landlord says no

If you duct, keep the run short, straight and 120 mm all the way — every bend and every metre of flexible hose cuts the airflow. Never vent into a chimney or flue used by a gas water heater.

2. Installation

  1. Height. Mount the hood so its underside is 65–75 cm above a gas hob. Centre it over the burners.
  2. Pyramid hoods hang on the wall bracket; the inox chimney telescopes up to the ceiling to hide the duct. Slim hoods screw to the underside of the wall cabinet, with the duct passing up through it.
  3. Duct or filter. Ducted: fit the 120 mm outlet collar and the duct, with a back-draught flap at the outside end. Recirculating: clip the carbon filter onto the motor housing and leave the outlet open to the kitchen (or to the chimney grille).
  4. Electricity. Plug into an earthed socket above the hood, or have an electrician wire it to a switched spur. Keep the plug accessible.
  5. Peel off the protective film, wash the aluminium filters, and fit them.

3. Using it so it actually works

  1. Switch it on before you light the hob — a minute or two early builds an airflow that catches the first steam.
  2. Pick the speed for the cooking: level 1 for simmering and boiling, level 2 for everyday frying, level 3 (and booster, where available) for frying fish, grilling and anything smoky.
  3. Leave it running 10–15 minutes after you finish, on low. It clears the smell and the grease still hanging in the air.
  4. Use the back burners when you can — they sit deeper under the hood's capture area.
  5. Lids on pans make the hood's job ten times easier.
  6. Switch the LED lights on while cooking; they draw almost nothing and show you what the pan is doing.

Controls

The BLDC inverter motor is quiet and efficient — the slim hood runs at about 60 dB on full. If it suddenly sounds louder or weaker, the filters are the first thing to check.

4. Filters: the maintenance that matters

Aluminium grease filters — every 2–4 weeks

  1. Switch the hood off and let it cool.
  2. Press the spring catch and tilt each filter down and out.
  3. Soak in hot water with a degreaser or dish soap, or run through the dishwasher on a hot program. A little discolouration of the aluminium is normal.
  4. Let them dry completely, then refit with the catch facing you.

Carbon filter — every 3–6 months (recirculating only)

Carbon cannot be washed; once saturated it simply stops absorbing smells. Twist it off the motor housing, fit a new one, and write the date on it. In a kitchen that fries every day, lean towards 3 months.

Frequently asked questions

Does the hood need a duct to the outside?

It works best ducted outside through the 120 mm outlet — all the steam, grease and smell leaves the house. If ducting is impossible, fit the carbon filter and run it in recirculating mode: grease is trapped by the aluminium filters, smells by the carbon, and the air returns to the kitchen.

How high above the hob should the hood be?

For a gas hob, 65–75 cm from the pan supports to the bottom of the hood. Lower risks heat damage and head-bumps; higher and it captures much less.

How often do I clean the filters?

Wash the aluminium grease filters every 2–4 weeks in hot soapy water or the dishwasher. Replace the carbon filter every 3–6 months in recirculating mode (it cannot be washed).

Why is the hood noisy or weak?

Usually a greasy, clogged aluminium filter, a saturated carbon filter, or a duct that is too long, too narrow, or kinked. Clean the filters first; if ducted, check the run and the outside flap.
