An Argosta refrigerator is simple to live with: no defrosting, no fiddly settings, and a cooling system designed for climate class T — the hottest rating, built for Egyptian summers. A few habits in the first week will keep it efficient and quiet for its 10-year lifespan.
Models this guide covers
- Top-Freezer Refrigerator — 403 L (integrated electronic control, chiller compartment)
- Top-Freezer Refrigerator — 311 L (mechanical thermostat dial)
1. Before you switch it on
- Let it stand. Leave the refrigerator upright and unplugged for at least 4 hours after delivery (24 hours if it travelled on its side). The compressor oil needs to settle first.
- Give it room to breathe. Keep about 10 cm clear at the back and 5 cm on each side and above. The condenser needs airflow to dump heat — a cramped refrigerator works harder and costs more to run.
- Keep it away from heat. Not next to the cooker, oven or a sunny window. Every degree of ambient heat is extra work for the compressor.
- Level it. Turn the front feet so the refrigerator stands firm and tilts very slightly backwards — the doors will then swing shut on their own.
- Wash the inside. Remove the tape and packaging, then wipe shelves and walls with warm water and a little baking soda. Dry everything.
- Plug into its own earthed socket. Avoid extension cords and multi-plugs.
Switch it on empty and let it run for 6–8 hours before you load food. The first cool-down is the hardest work it will ever do.
2. Setting the temperature
The targets are the same on every model: about 4°C in the fridge and −18°C in the freezer.
403 L — electronic control
Use the panel to step through the fridge and freezer set-points. Start at 4°C / −18°C. If you are loading a lot of warm food or it is peak summer, drop the freezer a notch colder for a day, then return to normal. The display confirms the set value, not the live temperature — give it a few hours to reach it.
311 L — mechanical dial
The dial inside the fridge compartment sets both sections together. Start at the middle position. Move one step colder in summer or when the refrigerator is very full; one step warmer in winter or when it is half-empty. Changes take 24 hours to settle, so adjust one step at a time.
Colder is not better. Below 2°C in the fridge section you start freezing vegetables and spending electricity for nothing.
3. How No-Frost works (and why there is no ice)
A fan pushes chilled air through both compartments (forced-air cooling) and the appliance quietly runs a short automatic defrost cycle every few hours. The result: an even temperature on every shelf, no frost on the walls, and no manual defrosting — ever. If you ever see frost, it almost always means a door is not sealing; see troubleshooting below.
4. Loading it the right way
| Where | What goes there |
|---|---|
| Top shelves | Leftovers, ready meals, drinks |
| Middle shelves | Dairy, eggs, cooked food |
| Chiller / lowest shelf | Raw meat, chicken and fish — coldest zone, and below everything else so drips cannot contaminate |
| Crisper drawers | Vegetables and fruit (keep them separate — fruit releases gas that wilts greens) |
| Door shelves | Condiments, juices, water — the warmest zone, not for milk or eggs |
| Freezer | Flat, labelled portions; leave gaps so cold air can circulate |
- Let hot food cool on the counter before it goes in.
- Cover everything. Open containers dry out and spread smells.
- Do not block the air vents at the back of the compartments — that is where the cold comes from.
- Keep the fridge about three-quarters full: enough mass to hold the cold, enough space for air to move.
5. Power cuts
Keep the doors shut and resist the urge to check. Closed, the fridge section stays safe for around 4 hours and a full freezer for around 24 hours. When power returns, the refrigerator restarts by itself — the compressor may wait a few minutes first, which is normal protection, not a fault. If you use a voltage stabiliser, choose one rated well above the refrigerator's wattage.
6. Normal sounds
A low hum when the compressor runs, a soft whirr from the fan, occasional clicks from the thermostat, and gurgling or crackling as refrigerant moves and the defrost cycle runs — all normal. Rattling usually means the refrigerator is not level or a bottle is touching the wall.
7. Cleaning and care
- Inside, every 2–3 weeks: warm water with a little baking soda or mild detergent. No bleach, no abrasive pads, no strong-smelling cleaners — the plastic absorbs odours.
- Door gaskets, monthly: wipe the rubber seal and the groove under it. A dirty gasket is the number-one cause of a fridge that "doesn't cool like it used to".
- Back of the unit, twice a year: unplug and gently brush or vacuum the dust off the condenser and the floor behind it.
- Smells: an open box of baking soda or ground coffee on a shelf absorbs them.
- Going away for weeks? Empty it, switch it off, clean it and leave the doors slightly ajar so it does not smell when you return.
8. Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Not cold enough | Door opened too often, gasket dirty, vents blocked, dial too warm | Clean the gasket, move food off the vents, set one step colder and wait 24 h |
| Frost on the freezer wall | Door not sealing or left ajar | Check nothing holds the door open; test the seal by closing it on a sheet of paper — it should hold |
| Food freezing in the fridge | Set too cold, or food pressed against the back wall | One step warmer; keep food away from the rear |
| Runs constantly in summer | Normal in 40°C ambient; also check clearance and condenser dust | Clean the condenser, open up space at the back |
| Water inside at the bottom | Drain hole in the back wall blocked | Clear the small drain channel with warm water |
| Does nothing, light off | No power | Check the socket with another appliance and the circuit breaker |

Frequently asked questions
How long should I wait before switching on a new refrigerator?
Leave it standing upright for at least 4 hours after delivery (24 hours if it was transported lying down) so the compressor oil settles. Then plug it in empty and let it cool for 6–8 hours before loading food.
What temperature should I set my Argosta refrigerator to?
Aim for about 4°C in the fresh-food compartment and −18°C in the freezer. On the electronic model, set those values directly. On the mechanical dial, start at the middle position and move one step colder in summer.
Why is there no ice in my freezer? Is No-Frost working?
Yes — that is exactly what No-Frost means. A fan circulates cold air and the appliance defrosts itself automatically, so frost never builds up and you never need to defrost it manually.
How long does food stay safe during a power cut?
Keep the doors shut. A closed refrigerator keeps food cold for about 4 hours and a full freezer for about 24 hours. Do not open the doors to check — every opening lets the cold out.
